We live in a world permeated by data. Data has become such an integral part of individual and societal life that we now speak of a data revolution. The ability to understand and analyse data is becoming a necessity in life, especially for people with a university degree. One particular type of data is statistical data.
Masaryk University Press is now releasing its third publication on data analysis in social science. The first two textbooks describe data processing in the SPSS environment in basic and advanced courses. A new, third textbook describing data processing in the R environment is based on these successful and award-winning volumes.
It is aimed at students and researchers in the social sciences. The R environment (freeware) is used for calculations, in particular through the so-called R Commander. After an introduction to working with R and R Commander, the book covers basic procedures for describing and manipulating data, and then basic analytical procedures in social science statistics, namely t-tests, analysis of variance, correlation, and regression analysis (including the logistic regression model). The book concludes with chapters on factor analysis and cluster analysis. Supplementary materials to the textbook are available from this link.
The importance of the textbook is summed up by the reviewer Prof. Stano Pekar, author of the book series "Modern Analysis of Biological Data in R": "The authors clearly wanted to write a textbook that could be used by generations of sociologists. By showing how to do data analysis in R, their textbook is likely to be immortal."
